Sailing away on a 14-day Norwegian Fjord cruise, July 2023, was a BIG check on my travel bucket list. My adoptive grandfather, D. Steen, immigrated to the United States in 1906 from Norway for a better life, and I used to hear stories this far away land. Here are some of my photographs. I remember stories my step-father told me of flying sorties into Malta during WWII. This year, I visited Malta, the island of Gozo and Valletta for the first time and both Rich and I fell in love with the people, food, architecture and the rich culture. Malta gained independence in 1974, and was previously ruled by Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and the British. With that said Malta has a very rich history.

Photos tips for the New Year - Capturing Light and Using Lightroom

Light is essential to photography and if you have a photography studio, like I do to control the light you can create some amazing pictures. But, what if you’re outside and the weather is not cooperating. You can wait for the light, come back another day, or experiment with the light and use tools in Lightroom that may give you some really pleasing results.

Some tips: Shoot in RAW and use manual mode for purest image quality and to control the aperture and shutter speed. To avoid camera shake use a tripod. In studio I use a tripod and for very low light and longer light exposures I use a tripod. Experiment with the levels in Lightroom for clarity, texture, tone, shadow, contrast, and saturation.

Ballet Northwest and The Nutcracker 2020 Wearing Masks by Jolly Sienda Photography

The year 2020 is unlike any year in our lifetime! Despite the worldwide Pandemic the show must go on safely! Ballet dancers from Ballet Northwest and the Olympia Dance Center performed The ballet The Nutcracker while wearing PPE masks during filming of The Nutcracker in November 2020 at The Center in Olympia, Washington. Jolly Sienda Photography was there on Friday, November 13, photographing an enthusiastic and talented cast under the direction of Ken and Josie Johnson.

Poulsbo, Washington's Little Norway Provides Rich Culture and Fun for the Family!

Have you ever visited Poulsbo, Washington? It’s a Norwegian-style town settled in the late 1800’s by Europeans from Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany. The town is known for its Norwegian old fashioned flair, vikings, colorful painted buildings, inviting boat marina, walk-able streets, restaurants, and shops. In the summer and winter there are viking festivals and art festivals on the marina. Families gather at the Austin Kvelstad Pavilion for picnics and in the summertime art festivals and musicians often entertain on the weekend from the pavilion. Liberty Bay provides a great area for boating, kayaking, water-sports, and a fireworks display over the 4th of July holiday.
